Ok, all time personal favorite reads: - Anatomy of the State by Murray Rothbard - "The Millionaire Fastlane" by Mj deMarco - "The Sovereign Individual" by James Dale Davidson - "The Manual: what women and how to give it to them" by W Anton

maxsuur

Probably the most impactful books I have ever read in my life

I thoroughly enjoyed "The Millionaire Fastlane" @maxsuur - disappointed when I joined the forum though. So much arrogance on there

maxsuur
2016-10-29 14:38
@jase agreed, i think it is also full of teenagers who want to buy a porsche

jase
2016-10-29 14:39
I'm enjoying the DC

jase
2016-10-29 14:40
Simon was the one that put me onto the forum

maxsuur
2016-10-29 14:40
Which one?

It's the Tropical MBA people that run it

maxsuur
2016-10-29 14:40
Let's see. Those guys are good

jase
2016-10-29 14:41
I was hoping it was harder to qualify though, there's still some below average post content

jase
2016-10-29 14:41
But it's better than most of the digital nomad groups

jase
2016-10-29 14:41
I find when you introduce DN 95% of the users are people wanting to get out

jase
2016-10-29 14:41
then around 50% trying to sell an information product they know nothing about

jase
2016-10-29 14:42
then 25% looking for technical support advice unrelated to being a digital nomad

maxsuur
2016-10-29 14:42
I guess the same thing happens when it comes to digital marketing

maxsuur
2016-10-29 14:42
In a gold rush, sell shovels...

jase
2016-10-29 14:42

jase

I have in the back of my mind trying to systemize my DM agency business in one niche, then sell/franchise the model in other niches

maxsuur
2016-10-29 14:43
That is quite the destination

maxsuur
2016-10-29 14:43

This is a great read - as travelers we have to remember to not just collect immigration stamps from countries, but to invest in them! https://www.amazon.com/Frontier-Investor-Emerging-Columbia-Publishing/dp/0231170440

maxsuur

Seems that the kindle version is unavailable

josh
2017-05-19 08:41
Something about holding the actual physical book on this one though and reading while trundling through the frontier that makes it more interesting!

jase
2017-05-19 08:42
I've been feeling that way a lot lately @josh - but the way I churn through books, the cost and bulk of having them is a real PITA

maxsuur
2017-05-19 08:45
same thing here

josh
2017-05-19 08:46
Yeah I hear you - and lugging them around. For some reason though I think I get more out of a physical book so I get them still when I want it for my tangible library, even sometimes if I read the kindle version also.

maxsuur
2017-05-19 08:46
the kindle version is more expensive than the paperback one!

maxsuur
2017-05-19 08:46

maxsuur
2017-05-19 08:47

jase
2017-05-19 08:49
I've moved house (which is always in a different country) so many times in the last 7 years that my dreams of having a well stocked libary have now turned into nightmares :slightly_smiling_face:

josh
2017-05-19 08:54
Yeah @jase I finally decided I'm at least staying in the general region for a few years so the books came out of storage and slowly have made their way across the seas! But it was purely kindle for a while. I embrace technology but until I get a minority-report style bookshelf with holograms of my books I see when I walk through the room, some things need to stay old school!

jase
2017-05-19 09:29

2017-05-19 14:15

maxsuur
2017-05-19 14:17

jase
2017-05-19 14:17

jase
2017-05-19 14:17
Often I'm taking notes for myself so it's handy to be on PC.. book on the left, notepad on the right

maxsuur
2017-05-19 14:19
well, the "kindle version" is readable by the kindle app

maxsuur
2017-05-19 14:19
and the .azw format is easily converted to .mobi, .epub or even pdf and read via "calibre"

maxsuur
2017-05-19 14:19
so you can have it on your ipad, as well.

@brian I think you can highlight and take notes in any digital reading app now, but there's just something about having a tangible book... I toured an innovative school recently in Silicon Valley and they use laptops and tablets for most everything, but the kids still naturally gravitate toward the tangible - pens and paper. Tactile learning / creativity are inherent in the human experience still (though it might eventually change if singularity happens and we learn everything similar to Neo).

Yeah it's off limits without a fund, but the second best way is probably to invest as an angel with locals who are running / setting up businesses, or build something yourself. Both require boots on the ground but it's a way to get involved. Also, many funds are interested in EM but don't have people there doing the on-the-ground research and networking, but are open to investing if they are fed the info - and one can benefit by being a liaison, such as with real estate investments.

SE Asia will yield the most spin-off bang for your buck in terms of other opportunities in the coming years. I love LatAm, but someplace like Laos or Myanmar or Cambodia where there's nothing like that but they're trendy travel destinations where nomads want to go, and growing consistently at 7-10% per year.

Three good books I?ve gone through in the last week or so: - Rise of the Robots by Martin Ford?about why the current wave of automation is different than earlier waves, which might strongly reduce the demand for human labor in the near-ish future. - Quiet by Susan Cain?surprisingly good book about how introverts differ from extraverts, and how that can be desirable in many cases. - Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman?the work of Kahneman and Amos Tversky is foundational to so many of the trends we see today, from the rise of behavioral economics, big data, and algorithmic decision making, ++ (I?ll probably read the Undoing Project by Michael Lewis next, which is a more biographical take on Kahneman and Tversky)

rjmarsden
2017-07-10 14:58
@globalconsulteurope one unique element for me was the clear advice about running a performance business and a lifestyle business, and how they both need a clear set of the 24 assets but with different priorities and importance given to both. I have one of each type of business on the go at the moment, but awaiting an exit from the performance business at the moment and looking to carry on with the lifestyle business for the foreseeable future. for me the book gave me some clarity on which assets I need to develop in each type of business and the reasons for it.

Probably there are a lot of bilingual people here (and those who don?t consider English as their native language). Do you notice that reading english books takes more effort from you, then books in your native language? Even if book is written in a clear, understandable without translation app manner?

maxsuur
2017-08-02 12:13
@skat I have read tons of non-fiction books in English. I have come to a point where I understand way better English-written books than those written in my mother tongue. And I also give way more credibility to those in English. I struggle a deal lot more at reading novels in English, because I've read barely none. Neither in Spanish.

bigworld
2017-08-02 16:50
Well, that's normal. For some known reasons people have a way better command of their mother tongue than other languages. The gap narrows with practice, though.

skat
2017-08-02 19:37
Probably my issue is that I was not reading English books enough. Mostly technical documentation, articles and other stuff you can find in internet. My 'English' attention span is probably very short, so I get tired of reading a lot of English text.

skat
2017-08-02 19:38
I'm reading in native language much more and much faster. I can finish a book in couple of days, but with English books it takes me at least a week.

maxsuur
2017-08-02 21:44

maxsuur
2017-08-02 21:44
You can try audiobooks. I do from time to time.

maxsuur
2017-08-02 21:46
In fact, I sometimes like a combination of audiobook + book. So you can get to absorb the content through different channels at various times of the day. Even when you are doing something else: washing dishes, exercising, commuting, etc

When I moved to the US some years ago and I began grasping the culture, I began to search stuff on the internet in English rather than in Spanish. A new world of knowledge opened to me. Had I restricted myself to Spanish only, I would know much less now. Now most of the stuff I read is in English and sometimes I don't even know how to translate certain expressions into Spanish even though I understand their meaning.

maxsuur

skat
2017-08-05 11:02
@clr interesting. Are you reading mostly enterprener focused? books? I mostly started off reading English to level up my technical skills, but with those books you find a chapter you need and then close the book. Later on you can revisit this book if you have more questions you can't find answers too.

skat
2017-08-05 11:04
Very rare technical book will be read by people from beginning till the end.

maxsuur
2017-08-05 11:48
Exactly. Most of the books I've read have a lot to do with entrepreneurship, marketing, psychology, personal development, personal finances, etc.

maxsuur
2017-08-05 11:52
I think @skat the thing here is find what you love, and let it kill you :slightly_smiling_face: If it weren't for those books (which I had a real interest in) I wouldn't have got my English so far

clr
2017-08-06 22:55
@skat I used to read some entrepreneur focused books. Then I went to reading about libertarianism, biographies. Lately I am reading mostly about psychology and personal development. I noticed that as I evolve my interests change.

@skat for me it's now easier to read (especially business books) in English than in my native Norwegian. What really helped for me was reading on a Kindle, where you can just click a word you're not sure about to get a dictionary definition or even the relevant Wikipedia entry. Especially when reading fiction (which I don't do very much anyway) I still run into some words I don't know, so the lookup function is very nice to have.

tkrunning
2017-08-08 13:34
And like @clr and @maxsuur, I almost exclusively search for information in English. I've actually done that since I was 12 and realized I could find a lot better resources for web development in English than Norwegian. Why "anyone" (who's reasonably fluent in English) would default to another language for general web use is beyond me. Unless you are looking for info that relates specifically to a non-English speaking country of course.

DYF is def a good book. I could say that most of it is common sense. But for some reason it managed to inspire and spurred me into action. Hopefully it will be life changing :)

ivan
2018-04-27 11:23
@roman, I agree, most of it is just common sense. I've even been thinking of doing most of that stuff for the last year based on personal experience but even then I haven't done it and was in need of some motivation / real life examples / clear guideline.

jase
2018-04-27 12:03
Even common sense books are good if the get you motivated. Most of the books I read, on reflection don't tell me anything new, just in a different way. But if they motivate me, it was worth the read.

roman

*Mitchell F. Walker* Ok, this guy makes like *15 investments in 24 years and they all return 1000% or more* Here are his simple rules that drive those choices. Why would you not want to know this information? Read this book, if you want to have an extremely successful business or a way of identifying which business will way outperform others.

Instead of keeping on banging my head against the wall trying to do exercises that are generally considered "good" but I don't respond well to, I can think "that's good for you but not good for me". Now I give myself permission to do the bodybuilding isolation type exercises I enjoy more and to stop thinking it's unhealthy unfunctional impractical wrong stupid training.

Been reading that book periodically since 2015. It's that prophetic. I wish the author released more material on the topic. Recently I found and excerpt on the topic of viruses, that resembles pretty much the very situation we're living in the present moment with Covid-19.

maxsuur
2020-05-20 08:25

Nice article @maxsuur! I have a personal feeling, that this could be about abolishing Cash as well and moving everyone to cashless payments.

maxsuur
2020-05-20 19:53
Definitely. I think it is about that, regaining sovereignty/control over their citizens and annihilating the middle class (while favoring big corporations). Who has thrived during these crisis? Amazon. Who hasn't? Small & medium business owners. We are going from 80/20, to 95/5. Or even more accused.

This book goes hand on hand with "The Sovereign Individual" "The Coming Neo Feudalism" I have to admit the title is catchy. https://www.amazon.com/Coming-Neo-Feudalism-Warning-Global-Middle/dp/1641770945/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=joel+kotkin&qid=1591036329&sr=8-1

Looking at what's going on in the US I'm re-reading: The Problem of Political Authority: An Examination of the Right to Coerce and the Duty to Obey by Michael Huemer Very much a life changing read for me as he questions political authority not based on some abstract social contracts or ethics instead he focusses on very basic moral principles. It's a very approachable view on libertarianism. Anyone else read it? Would love to hear your views

I'm sucker for psychology books, that try to explain complicated concepts in a simple (for normal humans) format. And this one really hit home with me. I've been running away from others people expectations of what I should be doing with my life (even from parents). And it was surprising to find a good explanation to my unsocial behavior. I actually managed to improve my relationship with mom, while reading this book. I found proper words to explain her things I had on my mind for so much years.

If you ever tried reading Freud or Jung - it's really heavy reading and not always applicable for a regular human. This book is based on Adler psychology and basically follows Jung and Freud footsteps. But is very practical, with a lot of good tips to have calm life.

Thanks for sharing, your answer just moved the book up on my priority list. My wife just mentioned that she read the book too. She grew up with a lot of trauma and really agreed with the chapter about how people assign meaning to their trauma which is the reason that keeps them trapped.

Another book I love, and it's really dated and out of print, but PT by "WG. Hill" was one of the first books I read on flag theory.

jason
2020-10-23 13:15
"A PT, as mentioned, simply leaves his present highly taxed, over-regulated country. The move can be either to a tax haven, like Andorra, Bermuda, Campione, the Cayman Islands, etc., or almost anywhere else in the world. Few realise that the earth is one giant tax haven for the person who is not considered a 'permanent resident'. So therefor, you can see why we have chosen as our title "PT". If one is not a 'permanent resident' subject to tax, one must be something else: Either a resident of somewhere, or a resident of nowhere, i.e. a Permanent Traveler. Of course, PT can stand for a lot of other things too: Prepared Thoroughly, Perennial Tourist, Perpetual Truthseeker, PriorityThinker."

Agreed! I have an original hard copy. I read it and I was hooked! Albeit some strategies definitely don't work in today's modern world, the underlying principles are the same.

A cool book I finished a few weeks back is Ray Dalio's (still to be released) "The Changing World Order". It's available for free on his website https://www.principles.com/the-changing-world-order/ or linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/changing-world-order-ray-dalio-1f/ Not only super cool of the man to release a 300+ page book for free months before it goes to print, it's also filled to the brim with good research, graphs and what have you. It really helped me with growing my insights into macro-economics/politics. The basic premise he goes for is that America has too much depth, too stretched out in its military conflicts and when compared to past empires like the Dutch, the English,... America seems to be on its way out. Whereas China, according to Dalio, is primed to become the next global super power. PS: the linkedin articles often stop in the middle of a chapter (probably due to a character limit per post) Read on the website if you don't want to miss a single thing.

> I have been going to China a lot over the last 35 years and am lucky enough to have become well-acquainted with its top policy makers. This has helped me see up close how remarkable the advances in China have been and how excellent the capabilities and historical perspectives that were behind them are. These excellent capabilities and perspectives have led China to become an effective competitor with the US in production, trade, technology, geopolitics, and world capital markets.

@bierlingm I don?t have anything against the Chinese, on the contrary, I feel terrible for them. It?s the regime that is tyrannical. His description of their ?remarkable advances? completely whitewashes this fact

I am the type of guy who never reads fiction books. But this time I started reading "Ready, Player, One" by Ernest Cline, and is blowing my mind. If you have read "The Sovereign Individual", and are into Crypto, NFTs and see the potential of VR, the book paints a picture of what the future of this planet might look like. Worth checking it out.
