Any recommendations for good health insurance ?

Watching. My time in my home country is coming to an end and my home private health insurance premium is due next month which I intend not to renew and instead switch to a global provider. Everyone seems to rave about SafetyWing but I need to inspect their policy.

2019-07-05 15:06
SafetyWing is just a travel insurance right? I know @simon recommended Integral in an article. I wonder if he still uses them

So far I have looked at Cigna, Bupa, Aetna and Integra. Cigna is the clear winner, decent coverage, cheapest, direct billing and covers you for 6 months back in your home country. Aetna and Integra were wayyyy expensive. Bupa I couldn't even get an online quote I had to call up blah blah, not worth my time so I have immediately dismissed them.

burrup.lambert
2019-07-24 07:22
Also going to look at Allianz

@burrup.lambert What did you go with in the end? I am doing the same as you: getting quotes from Cigna ($2450), Integra ($3860), AETNA ($4530), William Russel ($5285), AllianzCare ($5570) and BUPA (no bloody online quote!)

imatfaal
2019-08-07 11:04
In every case I'm trying to buy the best policy they have (no deductible, all outpatient services, repatriation for non-emergencies, dental cover etc.) But I am not including USA cover or maternity cover.

imatfaal
2019-08-07 11:36
Scrap BUPA, they don't cover the country I'm currently living in!

burrup.lambert
2019-08-07 13:37
I have not actually looked much more into it since that post! I will however say I was perhaps incorrect when I said Cigna was the clear winner as I realised I wasn't quite comparing apples to apples. I didn't realise Cigna Outpatient cover was an extra add on where with the others they are included which is why Cigna was so cheap when I was looking at it. That said, Cigna might still be the winner but I need to go back and double check every thing. I have learnt though to just fill out the online quote stuff with bogus details, email, mobile etc otherwise you will get someone contacting/pestering you like I did from Cigna. Though it wasn't all bad, that was where I found out they cover you for 6 months in your home country and direct bill. Indeed it is annoying Bupa does not provide an online quote. Perhaps once I have settled on a policy I will contact them last to see how they compare.

burrup.lambert
2019-08-07 13:39
For my own personal circumstances I do not care about Dental (teeth are in good nick + I'd rather fly to Asia for Dental work at a fraction of the cost). Medical Emergency Evac is a must, you never know where you will be and how far the closest hospital is.

burrup.lambert
2019-08-07 13:40
I'll still trying to fully understand the term 'out patient' and whether with each insurer it basically means the same thing.

imatfaal
2019-08-07 15:09
Yes, I'm already being hounded by all five providers! However, it's quite useful as I have some specific questions about coverage in random African destinations that I wanted answered.

imatfaal
2019-08-07 15:10
I'm a bit concerned that there's a $3000 difference between my lowest and highest quote. Like you, perhaps I am not comparing apples to apples...

imatfaal
2019-08-10 13:21
AETNA are looking like the most suitable providers for my needs, especially given their direct pay network in Africa. Ouch to paying $3800 for healthcare coverage though!

imatfaal
2019-08-18 12:06
I went with AETNA in the end. Bizarrely, as soon as I asked to pay in GBP the price shot down to GBP2100! Triple checked with a manager if this was a mistake and they said it wasn't...so always be sure to ask about the currency options before buying! I'm now covered worldwide (but only emergency coverage in USA), zero deductibles, dental and have direct pay so I don't have to pay then claim for outpatient stuff or prescriptions. Glorious.

burrup.lambert
2019-08-18 12:42
That makes it even harder to compare apples to apples when the price can change that much based on your payment currency!

burrup.lambert
2019-08-18 12:42
Glad to hear. I still haven't looked into but I need to soon as my private health insurance for my home country just lapsed a few days ago.

Hi, I just read the health guide. As a location independent person, when you buy Integra/allianz/Cigna. How it is decided where you are going ?to be shipped? in case of accident while traveling abroad from home country or country you are registered? And in case of long term illness treatment(HIV etc) where you will have to do the treatment? Globally(randomly), home country or the country you are registered? For example, i was born in South America, got EU passport, but will be registered in another EU country. Thanks

Hi all, so far during the last years I?ve been traveling with the private healthcare of my country and with a travel insurance(World Nomads). I had to pay for some consults to doctors and for routine exams while abroad as World Nomads as a travel insurance don?t cover this expenses. Recently I moved residence to Europe, so I asked for some quotes in Cigna, which I found expensive. So I am considering paying the private healthcare plan in my home country, continue to pay for a travel insurance(maybe better than WN) and also rely on my European EU health care system where I am resident. This is half the price compared to Cigna, the only drawback is that I may have to choose where to be treated, in my home country or in my european residency country. Any advices? Thanks

No, we paid up for 5 years without claims. Then they moved headquarters to VENEZUELA of all places, and two years later we were looking at a monthly premium that had us quit. Which is a real PIA, because now the person in question is sick without cover.

Thank you, this is much nicer than the IATA list I posted in #general . Glad to confirm UK is fully open (USA is kind of open too if coming from SEA). Being Asian, will need to pass on Mexico for fear of racism.

Have any :flag-au: Australians managed to leave Australia during Covid either on a second passport or with an excuse? I would love to hear how we are open to being very creative

brent
2020-07-10 10:02
@gun -- I thought you could leave, although ScoMo was talking about an outright ban but I didn't think it was in place yet...

benjamin
2020-07-10 10:54
@gun I know people with second passports and jobs in other countries who have been refused a flight out. Makes you wonder how valuable a second passport is as an 'insurance' policy if the country is to fail. One person I know got out as his work is 'essential' (doctor) and I've heard of people getting out if they're media or journalists but not sure if that's true.

brent
2020-07-10 11:45
This is a dangerous path for the Australian government - hell, any government - to be following. I'm all for sensible things (masks etc), but bans from leaving the country are a complete attack on Aussie's individual liberties/rights....

brent

Will be interesting to see what happens...

gun

Far out. Dam, was hoping you could simply fly out on the other passport. Any examples of a family 'medical emergency' (sick relative for example?)

daren.marshall
2020-07-10 16:48
I've resigned myself to not going back. Even if I use my second passport, there's too many public stories evidencing you can never leave.

benjamin
2020-07-11 01:45
I've heard it's possible, but unlikely. There was a public story in The Guardian this week about someone trying to leave Australia permanently with his family on UK passports so they could be with their elderly family members in the UK. They were denied an exit exemption until he mentioned he was also going to work as a doctor.

benjamin
2020-07-11 01:48
Not allowing someone to leave (especially on a 2nd passport) is one of the worst invasions of personal rights I've ever seen. Entry should be heavily restricted but exiting doesn't affect the country at all.

My expat health insurance is up for renewal! Anyone have any recommendations? This year I had an AETNA International Pioneer 4000 Plan with worldwide cover (excluding USA) and 0% coinsurance payment. Cover was excellent, although I never used it, and it was expensive at GBP2579 for the year. I'm young and healthy but live in North Africa and spend a fair amount of time in developing countries / dangerous areas for work... https://www.aetnainternational.com/en/individuals/health-plans/pioneer-plans.html

I was looking into this awhile ago but never got round to it. In Argentina I just pay out of pocket, plus I won't be travelling anywhere for a while. The companies I had on the short list were, Cigna, Bupa, Aetna, Integra, Allianca and one more, IMG? Do you work with other expats? Perhaps you could ask them?

Safety Wings got worldwide nomad cover now. I don?t use it or have references

mb
2020-08-18 13:32
Btw, my understanding with Safety Wings, is that it's not a full blown health insurance, but only for designated travelling/destinations. I currently got an offer from https://www.oominsurance.com/going-abroad/oom-living-abroad-insurance/ it's a health insurance for max 2 years. You can then apply for another 2 years. There's no permanency, so you can stop any day and get a restitution.

mb
2020-08-18 13:33
For me it's sort of akin to the mandatory Dutch health insurance I had. Both in costs and coverage.

mb
2020-08-18 13:33
My Spanish 'expat' insurance almost paid for all visits at ~ 180 euro a month for a family (2 kids at <18 years). But that only covered me while being in Spain.

Thoughts on this coverage? Includes US and Covid. Quoted only $450/year based on my age and residency. Amounts seem small but it seems enough at my age and current lifestyle.

I'm currently thinking about switching to the Allianz Worldwide Care global health insurance, does somebody here have real-life experience with them? I've checked some review sites and a lot of the comments there sound quite frustrated with it, at the same time I think that probably only the people with negative experiences are going there to comment, so I'm not putting too much value into these reviews... I'd appreciate it if somebody who has experience with them would let me know their opinion about them.

clr
2020-10-04 12:02
I have had insurance with them for the last three years. Haven?t made any claim so far, so I cannot comment on how efficient they are reimbursing claims. On the other hand, recently I changed my address, and they quoted me a price in USD, but later it turned out the amount was in EUR instead (so the price was quite higher). All I got for an answer was along the lines of ?sorry, it should have read EUR instead of USD? as if it didn?t make any difference. In general, my impression is that they seem a large organization and somewhat bureaucratic, where if something goes wrong nobody takes responsibility. The good part of being large is that they are not going to disappear. I am keeping them because I haven?t found any better option so far. I have looked into the Safety Wing insurance (the full insurance option, not the travel insurance) and the price is almost the same, but coverage seems to have more exclusions and higher deductibles.

Thx for the answer, that's an interesting story! I agree, the size is definitely an advantage

Hi, I have EU passport. Last month was in public hospital for 4 days in Latvia, and the service was brilliant. So decided to stop paying health insurance while being in Euro Europe. Does anyone got a good argument against this(would appreciate to read it)?

mb
2020-10-06 15:30
@omocha_10 Are you a registered resident in any EU country? Or just have a EU passport? Did you pay out of pocket for your Latvian hospital visit?

omocha_10
2020-10-06 23:48
I?m Euro resident with Euro passport.

mb
2020-10-07 07:27
And what health insurance were you paying, where? If you have a private health insurance on top of your public health insurance, I can see that perhaps as unnecessary. Unless you're trying to cover something extra, that the public health insurance doesn't currently cover. Or if you plan to get (extra) coverage outside the EU, when traveling abroad.

omocha_10
2020-10-07 10:54
I mean for the EU. I was paying World Nomads/Safety Wings. But now it feels that to pay private travel or health insurance while in the EU is not worth it...

gastan
2020-10-07 23:59
AS EU citizen you do have EU insurance. When something happens abroad, you just sign a paper that you did not travel purely for medical purposes and you should get same treatment as native person. I has accident in Germany, paid only like 10EUR for doctors visit, and ended up having operation in Germany. I may have ended up paying some 80EUR copay for the clinic, but I am not sure. I even get same insurance dotation for dental work done in Germany as if I were Germany insured. Yeah, EU citizen traveling in EU, you can go 'naked' and just hope they can take care of you:)

Ok, thanks. So my question would be... Why I know people residents of Spain and Portugal paying for private health insurance? Thanks

mb
2020-10-10 13:13
@omocha_10 I think as for people in Spain 'it depends'. If you're not self-employed and not employed, I don't think you'll have public insurance, given you don't pay social security. In that case you either pay out of pocket for each visit or take out a private insurance. Also I can image people taking out private health insurance in Spain, to have the freedom to choose a (better) clinic or hospital.

@ambroise.debret thank you for sharing. Just run their quote and the premium is ~USD 220/month for the LT Int. Health Plan. How did you get if for 100??

Or maybe based on citizenship (I?m :fr: )

My impression is, citizenship matters... e.g. I have a similar insurance (temporary abroad health insurance) which can be for max. 2 years, but you can cancel any day. It was through this company https://www.oomverzekeringen.nl/verzekeringen-buitenland/oom-tijdelijk-in-het-buitenland-verzekering/ and only because I have Dutch citizenship.

After 2 years, you can renew for another 2 years (but have to fill in the medical questionnaire again...).

mb
2021-06-22 10:39
@ambroise.debret Does it come with a yearly threshold of costs you have to pay yourself first?

ambroise.debret
2021-06-22 10:40
This one is for 1 year, renewable twice (3 years total) And has no medical questionnaire

ambroise.debret
2021-06-22 10:41
No, is a ?premier euro?

ambroise.debret
2021-06-22 10:41
You have to pay the basic costs yourself : doctocs, medecine but they reimburse fast. Hospitals are paid directly

mb
2021-06-22 11:04
ah hmm

mb
2021-06-22 11:04
e.g. I have the health insurance for around 90 euro, but every first 1k euro a year, I have to pay out of pocket (no reimbursement after).

mb
2021-06-22 11:05
I noticed when you sign up, you have to select a 'destination', but is that more as an indication of where you mostly stay? E.g. you'd be free to go to other countries and still be covered I assume? (depending if you selected World + US or without US of course).

mb
2021-06-22 11:06
Lastly, what is your direct experience using them? Fast reimbursement as you said?

I just sarted in Jan with them so only put France + Mexico so far

Great experience, they even reimbursed me for a yellow fever vaccine and ?pharmacy groceries? aka travel medicines. I know some very trustworthy ppl who have it

Thank you, I might consider!

Just run the calculation on their website, I think it depends on where you are based. I am based in SG and this brings me automatically into Zone 2. This might be a contributing factor.

The only good ones are the ones with the red lenses. The rest don?t work so good

Does anybody know something specific about getting COVID vaccination in Romania? I hear EU citizens can get Pfizer easily, I heard somewhere else that tourists can get vaccinated too - but I only have half baked sources and hearsay... Does anybody know something more specific - maybe where to get the official information about it?

klaus

Currently in Ukraine with no vaccine in sight, so popping over to Romania for a few days to get vaccinated with one of the EU approved vaccines - (and again for the second jab a bit later, if Johnson and Johnson is not available) - seems like a fairly good option, right now - if it indeed exists.

Don?t know about Rumania, but to me in Spain it helped me being a citizen, though I reside somewhere else. If you have citizenship in an EU country could make you get the vaccination

Where to get Covid vaccine in EU as a tourist?

klaus

@rtiagm Romania looks to be your best option in the EU. According to a second hand contact in Romania, even non-EU citizens can get vaccinated. I was planning to go with my non-EU gf, but found a local option instead.

Just got it in Vienna with a EU passport. But I guess non EU would be fine too

does anybody have a recommendation for health insurance that only covers the real bad stuff? (accidents, cancer, etc.) What by the way would such an insurance be called?

felix

April International has something like that. Compared a while ago insurances and they were doing good for the basics. If you want to get more holistic coverage, there are other providers who have wider coverage and are cheaper. April MyHealth has cancer coverage, etc.

I got the vaccine months ago. They didn?t give me any paper or covid passport. When I tried to get one, I had to do an E-digital identity, through an IRS related website. Now I?m in Lithuania, on a random walk saw some vaccine and testing stations, asked if I can get a test, they say I need to register on a website. Went to a website and to register you have to dot through.... your bank account....

Last year I discover the Latvia health system for non residents/tourists. Did general tests and came back this year. Very good facilities/professionals and great prices. A consultation with a Dr 35 euros and a thirough blood and urine test 60 euros. Doing this in the past in Hungary, Lithuania, Estonia, Portugal.... always around 400, so 60 was a steal. No cue, no waiting, results by email with password very fast. The only not so good thing is that you need to book a fee weeks before. But I really recommend it.

Hi, unfortunately in my country (eastern UE) a desired treatment for my chronical illness is unavailable for public sector due to being relatively expensive. I hope to get it anyways through an international private insurance that can cover it. Can you recommend any?

omocha_10

No, but there is a post in FS site about it.
